The Autonomous Region of Madeira hosts for the first time a European Universities Championship, the 5th European Universities Table Tennis Championship. This event, taking place between July 19 and 23, shall have the presence of around 120 athletes from 28 European Universities.

During these days, participants shall have the opportunity to get acquainted with the island, enjoying our landscapes and acknowledging a little bit of our culture and our traditions.

One of the crucial places to visit is the city of Funchal, particularly the old part of the city. Here, participants may get to know the history of the island's capital. There are several places of historical interest, such as São Tiago Fort; the business shops; the restaurants and bars, typical of our city; the cable cars, which goes up till the top of the city; the old buildings; the marketplace, named Farmers' Market; etc.

Also essential for those who visit Madeira, is the Island's traditional drink, Poncha! Throughout the whole island you may taste this marvellous drink in several bars. However, we recommend that you try it in the most recent bar of the old part of Funchal, Venda Velha (Old Grocery).

Restored with the goal of portraying the old grocery stores, Venda Velha has become a key spot for residents, including the young ones. This may be explained by the quality of the place and by the quality of the drinks it offers. Here you may find all kinds of drinks, but mainly they provide Poncha of different kinds of flavours, such as passion fruit, tangerine, English tomato, blue berries, red berries, etc.

Try it! We promise you will not regret it.
